Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
