This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a six-month break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
