Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
