European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
